Mediterranean Regional SHAW–IAU Workshop on Astronomy for Education
The Mediterranean Regional SHAW–IAU Workshop on Astronomy for Education (MASTED) is a regional initiative aimed at strengthening collaboration among astronomy educators, teachers, and National Astronomy Education Coordinators (NAECs) across the Mediterranean area. The workshop represents a continuation and expansion of the STEAM-MED project coordinated by the IAU Office of Astronomy for Education Center Italy (I-OAE), building on previous co-design activities and contributing to the development of a long-term regional community of practice in astronomy education.
MASTED workshops bring together participants from diverse cultural and educational contexts for a multi-day programme combining the exchange of best practices in astronomy education, discussions on curriculum development and educational challenges, and collaborative co-design sessions to develop and test new educational resources. The programme also includes hands-on activities based on inquiry-based and active learning approaches, as well as dedicated moments to reflect on equity, inclusion, and diversity, promoting inclusive participation and collaboration across the region.
The IAU Office of Astronomy for Education Center Italy (I-OAE) contributes to MASTED through the co-organisation of the workshops, support to the scientific and educational programme, and facilitation of co-design activities. Building on its experience in projects such as STEAM-MED, I-OAE supports the development of collaborative educational resources and strengthens connections among educators across the Mediterranean region.
The 2024 edition was held in Istanbul (Türkiye) from 16 to 20 October 2024, organised in collaboration with the NAEC Türkiye team, the Turkish Astronomical Society, and Istanbul Kültür University.
The 2026 edition will take place in Aegina Island (Greece) from 14 to 17 October 2026, organised by I-OAE in collaboration with national and international partners, including the ASTRO-EDU Erasmus+ project consortium.
