Multisensory Astronomy for Everyone
Multisensory Astronomy for Everyone
The Accessible Prints initiative equips the IAU Office of Astronomy for Education Center Italy (I-OAE) with innovative tactile printing systems to make astronomy more accessible to blind and visually impaired users. The project uses two types of printers: one for relief-printing on A4 sheets and another for creating small 3D resin prints, both supporting prototyping and feasibility studies for larger tactile models.
These tools have already been used to create tactile representations of telescopes such as ALMA, JWST, Gaia and VLT, as well as “in-relief” prints of the main images from the INAF Time Machine exhibition in Turin (March–June 2025). The prints allow visitors to explore astronomical objects and concepts through touch, offering an inclusive and engaging multisensory experience.
By combining technology, accessibility and astronomy, Accessible Prints enables all audiences to connect with space in a hands-on way, enriching public engagement and supporting inclusive educational paths.
